Strengthening education outcomes by enhancing school ecosystems with DRE solutions

Sustain Plus facilitates augmentation of existing spaces and provides access to technology-based solutions to strengthen the education value chain in rural and remote areas. Sustain Plus, together with partner network, works on identifying and addressing relevant energy and quality gaps in school infrastructure, delivery mechanisms, and pedagogy with an aim to improve the quality of education being provided. It intervenes to optimise infrastructural design using local contexts, provides access to digital learning aids, and uses technology-based solutions to make spaces conducive to teaching, interactions, and learning.

Need Gaps

According to the Annual Status of Education Report, 2018, accessibility to school has increased with 97.2% of students now attending primary school. Even though the allocation of total budgetary expenditure in education has gone up (3.3% of the total budget in 2018-19), the quality of education and infrastructure support required for good learning outcomes remain poor and neglected, affecting the learning levels of students, especially girls. Lack of access to energy in remote regions and tribal areas hamper education of children directly as it disrupts classroom engagement, reduces training time for teachers, decreases attention span of both teacher and students, and limits the use of technology-based teaching-learning methods. Indirectly, it impacts the health of the staff and students due to the use of fuel wood in kitchens and increases drudgery of students who have to fetch water for drinking and other uses themselves.

Our Approach

Sustain Plus works across the rural education ecosystem including balwadis, aanganwadis, primary and secondary schools, and hostels in remote and tribal regions to help improve educational spaces by making them conducive to creativity and quality learning.

Sustain Plus plugs the energy gaps within school infrastructure by providing access to solar energy and solar water pumps, thereby, increasing classroom attendance and use of school libraries, and reducing students’ drudgery. Solarisation further helps in the uptake of IT-enabled digital content and audio-visual devices that improve students’ engagement with learning materials. It also augments kitchen spaces by creating a better ambiance and providing access to clean cooking stoves that help improve the health of the staff and students.  

Sustain Plus addresses the lack of quality training of teachers by providing access to solar energy in Block Resource Centres. Undisturbed energy supply helps teachers undergo full training as well as increases the usage of digital teaching-learning methods. At the pedagogy level, it collaborates with knowledge partners in creating engaging content around renewal energy and sustainable development, and demystifying the course curriculum on the subject of energy through workshops and training of teachers as well as students.
